Welcome to this introductory short course on educational leadership - Improving Schools through Effective Leadership.

Over the next two weeks, we’ll be delving into some of the topics covered by the full degree so you can experience what it’s like to learn online at your own pace.

Coming up

This course aims to help you develop your leadership skills, explore leadership principles and grow the confidence you need to succeed in your school.

Through a blend of videos, tasks, case studies and online discussions, you will explore:

  • Ideas of leadership
  • Your own leadership style, strengths and weaknesses
  • Leadership theory and its practical applications
  • The importance of culture
  • Effective school leadership in times of crisis
  • Learning-centred leadership and school improvement

Our learners will be from all over the world. While some of the content talks about the UK education system, we welcome insights on education and leadership from learners’ global perspectives.

While studying the course, you can expect to see interaction and comments from the Lead Educator, Nigel Pattinson, as well as from our course Hosts. On this course, we encourage a strong learning community. The learning is focussed around conversation and you are encouraged to support other learners, share your own experience and knowledge, and listen to new perspectives. We hope that you will enjoy interacting with and learning from each other in this way.

The master’s degree offers a principle-driven approach to successful leadership and aims to equip you with the skills you need to successfully lead a school and have a positive impact on teaching and learning.

You’ll have a chance to explore the full degree in more detail later in the course, but first – what is leadership, really?
