Mark Blaxter heads the Tree of Life programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, which is sequencing 70,000 species for the Earth Biogenome Project. Mark’s research was the inspiration for BlobToolKit and he describes how contaminants and symbionts and parasites in new genome assemblies became visible for the first time using blob plots.
