We have begun to explore a number of issues that we hope have started you thinking about public health and what being involved in public health may mean for your nursing practice.

Florence Nightingale was an influential nurse who recognised that nursing involved more than being just at the bedside caring for patients who were ill. Nursing has come a long way since the life of Florence Nightingale (1820–1910) but to what extent is her legacy as a public health campaigner and social reformer visible today in nursing?
