<v Speaker 1>The first week together we introduce you to three <v Speaker 1>different kinds of networks including an <v Speaker 1>innovating network in which members need to have <v Speaker 1>a fairly high level of trust in one another. But how do you build trust and what role does trust play in a sort of collaborative networks needed in strategy? That’s what we’ll discover in this video. Trust, when you boil it down, is a pretty simple equation. We start with two people, A and B. A and B will quickly decide if they can trust one another if each of them find that the others words matches their actions.

You’ll learn about this soon but I’ll give you a little bit of a preview now. Our approach to strategy builds trust by putting people to the test immediately giving them a near immediate opportunity to match their words with their actions. Lets now dig a little deeper into the role trust plays in collaboration. We call this The Collaboration Continuum. Any human relationship follows some of these

basic steps: human relationships start with mutual awareness you become aware somebody else exists on this planet. We’ve all become mutually aware of someone across a crowded room for instance that’s when relationships begin. They don’t stop there. The next step on this continuum is when we begin to share information when we begin to tell someone a little bit about our world to begin to understand a little more about theirs. But a relationship can’t stop there if it’s going to make its way all the way to collaboration. The next step in this relationship as we go beyond your sharing information we start to share resources.

I may have something that would be valuable to you and I may share that with you whether to contact whether it’s a recommendation for a book I read recently. Sharing resources is the next step in the collaborative relationship. Sometimes we stop here at co-execution, the next step in the continuum. We decided we were going to co-execute something together, do something together, because many hands make light work. We may enjoy co-executing together and experience some economies of scale and often we think that we are collaborating at this point. But we are not yet collaborating at the highest level. What we want to get to is co-creation.

When we do something together that neither of us could do separately, we design something of value that we each have a stake in. There are two dynamics that we need to pay attention to as we make our way along this continuum for mutual awareness all the way through innovation and co creation; that involves trust and turf. Turf levels can be high and you don’t have to have much trust to become mutually aware of someone but if you’re going to make it to co-creation and innovation you have to have a high level of trust and you’re going to have to break down any turf or territorial types of issues.

So now imagine these notions of matching words with actions and this progression of mutual awareness, information sharing, resource sharing, co-execution, and finally co-creation occurring with not just two people but ten, fifty, a hundred or more. That’s how you build trust at scale, how you build trust within a network, how you design and guide an agile strategy. Next, you’re going to have a chance to do some more reflecting on trust.
