This course focuses on developing an overview of survey methodology, enabling you to leverage data collected on web servers to make UX design decisions, conduct A/B and preference testing, and conduct remote usability testing to support design and re-redesign efforts.

Surveys are very commonly used to measure experiences and opinions from groups of people. Good survey design involves a careful connection between defining suitable research needs, convincing people to answer your questions, and writing questions that elicit high quality information.

Today’s ever-expanding research toolkit enables researchers to collect both quantitative and qualitative insights across time and the product design lifecycle, around the world, and in a culturally-sensitive way so that designers, developers, and product managers know what problems to solve, how, and have confidence that their solutions will work.

In this course, you will:

Learn about when to use a survey as a UX method or not, Be exposed to common aspects of survey research important to high quality survey design Gain competency in the pros and cons of different sampling techniques Learn about some ways to increase the number of responses to your surveys Get some specific advice about writing many types of survey questions Gain some experience writing survey questions Learn how to identify effective research questions and approaches that address the needs of your team using a multi-method approach. Design effective remote unmoderated studies. Define, prioritize, and track the analytics and key performance metrics that matter to your organization. Gain some experience of preference testing. Be exposed to analytics as a thought exercise around how to work with data – and identify gaps – that support UX design needs. Effort

The course involves eight weeks that include videos, discussions, quizzes and other activities. All students are expected to provide peer feedback and to participate in discussions. Each week, you should expect to spend about 2-6 hours on reviewing course readings and videos as well as completing the assignments. Weeks 4, 6, and 8 have peer reviewed assignments, while weeks 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 will feel shorter.

Course Schedule & Grading Policy

Course materials and assignments are available for self-paced learning.

You are expected to complete your assignments on your own, while it’s common to use survey questions that others have created in practice and in some cases, interview participants in the process of research. We do not expect any shared communication about the quizzes. Learning from each other through the Discussion forum is encouraged, but no collaboration between learners is expected. Submitted assignments, therefore, should be your own work and not that conducted collaboratively with others. While we ultimately cannot monitor everything, FutureLearn and the course team will monitor forums and assignments for any activity that violates obvious codes of scholarly conduct.

Contact with the Instructor

Given the large number of students in this course the teaching assistants or instructor(s) should not be contacted directly with any questions. While we appreciate the time and effort you put into the course, responding to questions is virtually impossible. Instead, please direct your questions to the forum, where the instructor will respond when meaningful. The course team will monitor the forums and participate on a regular basis.

There is no required textbook for this course, but the following text was the source of many of the design guidelines used in the video lectures, and is a wonderful reference for further information about survey methods.

Summarised findings may be published in online and print publications and in University of Michigan promotional materials and may be included in presentations at professional development events, academic and professional conferences, and in various private settings. All the information collected during this survey, will be stored and handled according to the Center for Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan’s privacy policy.
