  • Welcome everybody, it looks like we have a good variety of perspectives coming into this course. I can imagine there will be a lot of different expectations around such a course and while it would be impossible to meet all of these I do hope you all gain something from it. This is our fourth run of the course and we already received a lot of positive feedback...

This is our fourth run of the course and we already received a lot of positive feedback...

  • Hi Filip, version starting on 6th April will be same as other ones but if you've just recently signed-up to this one then you'll get the weekly emails with the 6th April one. Original plan was not to offer another run until Sept after tourism high season coming to an end (at least here in the northern hemisphere) but of course now there is no tourism season....

  • Just a little update, given how our world has changed completely since this version was started I will now be offering a brand new run of the same course starting Monday 6th April. The new version will appear to register from next week but you will still have access to this version. Do spread the word to others in your networks and hope you are all keeping...

  • Good points, and do appreciate museums have higher level roles such as curation, research, conservation, etc.

  • Welcome everybody, it looks like we have a good variety of perspectives coming into this course. I can imagine there will be a lot of different expectations around such a course and while it would be impossible to meet all of these I do hope you all gain something from it. This is our third run of the course and we already received a lot of positive feedback...

  • Great Martin, would be grateful too if you spread the word amongst your own Scottish tourism networks (and beyond). Another run starting 24th Feb which will finish just before Easter when the main season kicks-in and I know you'll all be super busy with the visitors. All the best with your new database.

  • I'm afraid in most of the rest of the world it is still a bit of a Wild West scenario and down to individual countries to legislate accordingly. As you know too most individual governments are still playing catch-up with the tech industry. Recently, I believe California introduced legislation at a state level which was seen as GDPR-lite.

  • Passed on your message to Jane - she was impressed, wow small world

  • Think she is not intending to be as dogmatic as that but rather where you think you do have a good idea of how something is in your business make sure its backed-up in the data. I think the other segments from Sara show her broader take on data but can see how this edit could be mis-read.

  • Thanks for the detailed response Deirdre and so pleased to hear the course worked well for you.

  • Haha, I suppose we were a bit lenient in that regard! Glad you enjoyed the course Stuart.

  • Yes, a fair point

  • Thanks John and a good point about having it at the beginning too. Will try to do that for the 3rd run

  • Welcome everybody, it looks like we have a good variety of perspectives coming into this course. I can imagine there will be a lot of different expectations around such a course and while it would be impossible to meet all of these I do hope you all gain something from it. This is our second run of the course and we already received a lot of positive feedback...

  • Hi Hassan the point being made here is that this is a myth that it does harm your business..

Hopefully you will still have access for a while yet to the current one.

  • Good question Kathy, collecting data isn't just about knowing individual customers and encouraging repeat use/loyalty although for some providers this is more significant than others. • Whether you are a fan of them or not this is when companies like Expedia can help reach audiences that otherwise would not be coming to you. Good as a component of your wider strategy.

  • Yes something key players in the sector need to work on

  • Yes, in one of the case studies Lindsay from the Fringe makes a good point about just collecting what you need to minimise steps in ensuring a purchase. There’s always opportunities further on to request more data if the visitor wants to opt-in.

  • Welcome to the course Donald. Sounds like a really interesting and worthwhile company. Could see smart technology, gps and geofencing working great with your company. Anyway hope this course helps you and your business along the way

the course. Hope it helps inspire you further along your data journey. Thanks for taking time to fit it in too!

  • Sadly a future learn “feature”

  • Covering a few generic points here too but hopefully you will find something that works for you in some of the upcoming content.

  • This article is a little more generic and couched more in terms of not being intimidated by the data science side of things that you might read about. Rather exploring the data you have at your hands. But of course some of this data is big in and of itself such as the specific examples you have given Deirdre, particularly in the world of tourism. Also week 4...

  • Yes, we did debate about getting into that whole issue of "fake news" of which TripAdvisor has received significant news coverage in the tourism world. As it was we decided to just focus on covering the main tools and not get too drawn-in on particular issues such as this. But good to point it out.

  • Sorry to hear that @DavidSmythe. In case this helps, I know the FutureLearn platform has a policy of opening pages in the same window. But you can still right click and open particular pages in a new tab/window to enable switching between different page views or keeping one open while you advance through with other tab.

  • You're right Frank and we look at GDPR in week 2 but it would probably good for me to flag that earlier and let people know it is being covered later on.
