[Michael] We know that engaging with volunteers in industry, such as STEM Ambassadors, can have a real positive impact upon young people. Educators can sometimes struggle to help students see the connection between the curriculum and the real world. STEM Ambassadors can provide a link between the classroom and the workplace inspiring students from a range of different abilities and backgrounds to consider following STEM careers they may have never dreamed of before.

This course is the first in a series of four that will guide you through resourcing, planning, delivering and reviewing practical STEM activities. This two-week, self-paced course will introduce you to:

  • What you can do as a volunteer in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) working with young people in schools and non-school settings.
  • How to draw upon special collections of resources to support practical activities in STEM with young people.
  • Working with young people inclusively, with an introduction to special educational needs settings, gender bias, minority and disadvantaged groups.

  • Identify the range of resources available that support practical activities that inspire young people in STEM subjects.
  • Evaluate and adapt resources for a specific audience and specific activity with young people, reflecting the diversity and the context for the activity.

Who is the course for?

This course has been created for anyone volunteering with young people in STEM. You may be part of a formal volunteering scheme and known as a STEM champion or STEM ambassador, or you may be a youth volunteering group organiser, field trip educator, working with scout groups (and similar), outdoor pursuit centres, outreach from NGOs.

You will need knowledge of STEM subjects or experience of working in a STEM environment.
