Learn how to ensure all young people get a chance to explore STEM subjects

If you work in STEM industries, you will know that making science, technology, engineering and maths relevant to all young people is vital. As a STEM Ambassador, you can inspire diverse audiences with practical activities and resources, tailored to their interests.

This course is the start of your volunteering development, empowering you to make a real difference. You will learn how to find and adapt resources for STEM activities. You will explore current research on diversity and learning how to engage every young person in practical STEM activities by understanding different contexts.

Are you aware of how mathematics is integral to your work? Could you be the inspiration for the next generation of scientists and engineers? [Michael] We know that engaging with volunteers in industry, such as STEM Ambassadors, can have a real positive impact upon young people. Educators can sometimes struggle to help students see the connection between the curriculum and the real world. STEM Ambassadors can provide a link between the classroom and the workplace inspiring students from a range of different abilities and backgrounds to consider following STEM careers they may have never dreamed of before.

We’ll introduce you to a range of STEM resources which have been quality checked and especially curated for volunteers, and support you in tailoring resources to the young people you work with. This course is the first in a series of four that will guide you through resourcing, planning, delivering and reviewing practical STEM activities. [Michael] Engaging young people through practical STEM activities enriches the curriculum and can help to embed learning and encourage further discovery.

    • The impact of volunteers

      Welcome to the first course in the Inspiring Young People in STEM program. We start by looking at the impact you could make with practical activities.

    • Activities in context

      Not all resources and activities will work in all situations. What might influence your choice of resource and practical activity?

    • Resources for activities

      Resources are the starting point for thinking about practical activities, but where do you find credible, high quality resources?

    • Reviewing the week

      This week you have looked at resources as a starting point for activities and considered how they might relate to different scenarios. Does that mean you can just reuse what you find though?

    Diversity in STEM

    • Using resources and thinking inclusively

      We start the second week of the course by starting to think about diversity in STEM education and STEM careers. What role do you think you can play in supporting diversity in STEM?

    • Special educational needs

      If you've not volunteered in special educational settings, you'll find out more from the teachers and students here. What questions might you have about volunteering in unfamiliar contexts?

    • Gender

      Gender can have a impact on attainment and the likelihood of girls choosing physics A level and engineering. How would you consider gender when running your activity?

    • Disadvantaged backgrounds

      Disadvantage might impact on how young people relate to your practical activity. How will your approaches to finding out about their contexts help?

    • Adapt a resource

      Put what you've learnt in this course into practice. Review one of the resources you've found and share how you've adapted it for a group of young people.

    • Taking your volunteering forward

      Now is the time to reflect on your progress so far on the Inspiring Young People in STEM program. In the next course you'll apply what you've learnt so far an plan your volunteering activity.

What will you achieve?

By the end of the course, you'll be able to...

  • Explore current research on diversity and the implications for STEM communication and apply this to their own interactions with young people.
  • Identify the range of resources available that support practical activities that inspire young people in STEM subjects.
  • Evaluate and adapt resources for a specific audience and specific activity with young people, reflecting the diversity and the context for the activity.

Who is the course for?

This course has been created for anyone volunteering with young people in STEM. This includes STEM Ambassadors in the UK, youth volunteering group organisers, field trip educators, scout groups (and similar), outdoor pursuit centres, outreach from NGOs. You will need knowledge of STEM subjects or experience of working in a STEM environment.
