We’ve learnt some strategies around divergent and convergent thinking along with thinking in analogies to help creative thinking. In this step, Gerard Puccio introduces the Thinking Skills Model which offers a step-by-step path to more original ideas to help problem solving.

The three basic stages within this model are Clarification, Transformation and Implementation.

To use the model we need to work clockwise, entering at any point.

Within each stage there are 2 steps, with a central ‘Assessing the Situation’ step where you gather data about the situation.

The seven steps are outlined below.

Assessing the Situation
To describe and identify relevant data and to determine the next process step.

CLARIFICATION

Exploring the Vision
To develop a vision of a desired outcome.

Formulating Challenges
To identify the gaps that must be closed to achieve the desired outcome.

TRANSFORMATION

Exploring Ideas
To generate novel ideas that address significant gaps/challenges.

Formulating Solutions
To move from ideas to solutions.

IMPLEMENTATION

Exploring Acceptance
To increase the likelihood of success by testing solutions.

Formulating a Plan
To develop an implementation plan.
