Data, analysis and results

Now, let’s get back to the data analysis and results in this hospital. We determined the antibiotic use using the pharmacy computer system. And the consumption was calculated as defined daily doses per 100 bed days. These bed days were calculated after receiving monthly admission data from the medical record section of the hospital. Each antibiotic was painstakingly calculated on a monthly basis and coded as per the defined daily dose and Anatomical/Therapeutic and Chemical Index. And then, a standard time series plot and calendar plots were depicted monthly, so that we could pick up even the seasonal variation in both overall and specific antibiotic groups.

The analysis was done through segmented regression, determining the impact of guidelines at certain points of the time graph on antibiotic use. And as you can see, when antibody policy guidelines were accessible through online computer system– that is, in segment five– there was a significant decrease in antibiotic use. When you look at the graph, you can see a lighter shade of pink and purple, especially in years 2011 onwards to 2012. And so, in summary, I’d like to say that the number of hospitals with hospital information systems is rapidly increasing globally. An intranet policy guideline strategy is possible where there is access to computers in wards, outpatient clinics, intensive care units, and other areas.

So I feel this mode of implementation has the advantage of widespread, instant dissemination with frequent updates. Feedback is also possible. So I feel that centres that can incorporate online dissemination may have a quick win in containing antibiotic use. I’d like to thank you for your patient listening. And I’ve put some resources where you can do some extra reading. Thank you, good luck. And may you have a good, effective antibiotic stewardship in your own area.

In this final video Dr Chandy explains how the data was calculated, how the data was displayed and what it showed.

  • What challenges do you have in collecting data and analysis in your own context?

  • How can you surmount these challenges in order to measure antibiotic use and effectiveness of AS?

  • What are the best ways to present data to convince your management to focus more on AS?

  • Think of other strategies for AS in which online applications or innovative IT technologies could be used as a quick win for AS in your own context.
