When designing a lesson for delivery on a blended or hybrid learning basis, it can be useful to think in terms of ‘pedagogical patterns’. These will help you to conceptualise your lesson and represent your design in a clear and accessible form.

To support the development of competencies and skills in this area, the University College London’s (UCL) Knowledge Lab, has developed an online tool- the Learning Designer. In short, the Learning Designer encourages teachers to think about the context of teaching, the learning outcomes of their lesson, the sequence of learning activities and the technologies that will help students to attain them. When complete, the plans can be saved and shared with the wider academic community as a model of good practice.

In this video, Eileen Kennedy explains how the Learning Designer works. This information is also available on the Learning Designer website.

This is an additional video, hosted on YouTube.

After watching the video, I encourage you to enrol to gain access to the tool via the Learning Designer website. You can then use it to create your own blended or hybrid learning sequence.

As you become familiar with the tool, you will realise the extent to which it has been influenced by Diana Laurillard’s (2012) work, especially in the area of learning types. When you have finished, click on the share icon to get a shortened URL, then post it in the comments below with a short summary of your design. Spend some time exploring the designs to see how other people have approached this task. Please feel free to draw attention to any design(s) you find particularly noteworthy.
