Welcome – Bem-vindos!

Welcome.

Olá. Eu sou o Elói. Eu sou brasileiro.    Olá. Eu sou a Isabel. Eu sou portuguesa.    Welcome to our course Portuguese for global communication level 1. Taster. We hope we do a good job at linking our content with your interests and passions. Above all, we hope you enjoy this taster. We would like to enable you to do things with the language, such as, introduce yourself by saying your name, nationality, occupation, exchange phone numbers, spell your name, say where you live, and use basic sentences to talk about your family. In short, by the end of these two weeks, we’d like you to be able to use some basic language to talk about yourself and people around you.

To provide you with language input, we have prepared texts, audios and videos. The degree of input each of you needs before you start producing language varies. You can follow your own pace and go back to any step to revise. We will encourage you to be productive by writing or recording your voice and posting it in the comments. Last but not least, Quizzes an game-like activities are other ways to engage with the language. There are different types of audios and videos. Look out for the ones that have  João and Marta as the main characters. They are part of a storyline where relevant language is displayed.  João is Brazilian and Marta is Portuguese. Well, enough spoilers.

These two weeks are part of a 10 week micro-credential course. If you decide to join the micro-credential, you can expect topics such as daily routine, weekend and holiday plans, food, people, past experiences, etc. All this will be combined with weekly one hour online seminars that will focus on speaking. At the end, there is an exam which enables learners to be awarded 15 credits for this postgraduate micro-credential. I think it’s time to be hands on. Combinado. Até logo!

Alexandra Lourenço Dias would also like to say hi. She is a lecturer at King’s College and has produced one of our videos in Week 1: Language awareness Brazil – Portugal.

Listen: Olá. Eu sou a Alexandra e sou portuguesa. = Hi. I am Alexandra and I am Portuguese.

We are excited to have you on board! We hope that by the end of this 2-week taster you feel you have achieved significant learning and enjoyed the process. Weeks 3 to 10 are available to those who would like to take part in the microcredential course, which should start in January 2022. Enrolments will be available closer to the starting date here on FutureLearn.

This course is designed for complete beginners. However, if you have some basic experience with Portuguese, you may benefit from some new content and more practice.

You will soon be asked to introduce yourself in Portuguese. For now, we would love to know more about you. In the comments below, use English to share some information with us:
