Description of the Case Study Learner

Oksana was born in Odessa, Ukraine in 1980, a port city of just over 1 million. Her first languages are Russian and Ukraine. She attended University and studied Economic Management. She then joined the largest bank in Odessa and worked there for eight years. In her work, she travelled to all the different branches of the bank, performing a wide range of roles and working with many different people, a job that she greatly enjoyed. She subsequently met her New Zealand husband, and moved to Hamilton in 2016. Since then she has run her own beauty business and her goal is to improve her English sufficiently to enable her to work as an astrological consultant.

Since July 2022 Oksana has attended an English language class for employment at the polytechnic in Hamilton. The class is at level 4 of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL), which is equivalent to B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
