Routes Into Policing

There are now three routes into policing, which you can consider, if you want to pursue a career in the police service. All police officers will now be educated to degree level and the old entry routes have been phased out.

Degree Holder Entry Programme

This route is suitable for people who have completed a non-policing degree who will then complete a conversion course. Normally you will complete a two year practical programme whilst also working as a police officer within the force that recruited you.

Pre-Join Degree

A number of universities have been licensed by the College of Policing to deliver a pre-join degree, the BSc in Professional Policing. The pre-join degree is a professional academic knowledge-based degree, based on the national curriculum for the police constable role. It will provide you with an entry route into policing if you wish to study before you apply to join a police force.

Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship

To access this route you would apply directly to a police service that is recruiting under this scheme. You will receive practical on-the-job learning whilst simultaneously studying for a degree and usually after three years you will be awarded a degree in professional policing practice if you successfully complete your apprenticeship.
