Identifying and developing all your skills

An introduction to week 2 of the 'How to start your career in games development' FutureLearn course from the BGI.
0.8
In week 1, we looked at some of the things that games developers do day-to-day and what drives them. We thought about the main things that they do to create a game, how they work with each other, and the sequence of development. Now it’s time for us to think about how our developer’s got there, what skills they had before they started their jobs. We’re going to investigate two different categories of skills that you’ll use in a games job, and ask our developers and experts how these skills are used in the workplace. Don’t worry. We’ll see that our developers didn’t have all the skills their jobs required when they applied.

But they did need to show the potential that they could grow into the roles with additional training. So it’s really important to say that this is a safe space where it’s OK to be unsure or perhaps a little less than confident on some things. This is not about checking how one person measures up compared to others. It is about you finding out what is required for the roles you are interested in, giving you the tools and hopefully the confidence to evaluate where you are and where you want to get to.

Welcome to Week 2.

After looking at the roles available in games development, this week we’ll talk to our developers and experts who’ll share some of the skills they use every day, and give you some tools to help you identify the skills used in games development roles.
