What I wish I knew about job applications

Developers discuss how they prepared themselves for job applications.
This week, we’re going to find out about the application process for jobs in the games industry. Putting yourself forward for a job can be intimidating, but everyone gets nervous, as we will see. It was really nerve-racking putting myself forward for a job I really wanted. I didn’t think I had really any confidence at the time that I was good enough for the role, personally. Yeah, it’s always very nerve-racking, just because you want it so much. And then you know it’s very competitive. There are lots people going for it. And you can often feel like you’re not good enough, that you’re not going to be as good as a lot of other people.
So that’s always kind of on the back of your mind a little bit. Yeah. And I think it’s really easy to get wrapped up in the thoughts of like, oh, well, maybe I’m not good enough. And maybe there are going to be 100 other candidates who are better than me. But I always try and picture in my mind that like, well, maybe there are a lot of them who aren’t quite as good as I have. And if I don’t put myself out there, then I’ll never know whether I’ll get that position or not.
Initially, looking at the games industry from outside, I didn’t think there was anything that I had to contribute specifically, because I didn’t have a background in computer science. Working within the industry in a support function, I started to observe producers, see how they led and drove their teams, and how they helped everyone. And I knew that was something that I like to do and that I could do. But I had very little confidence in myself being able to be a producer. I just had to keep telling myself it’s something that I could do so that other people would believe in me, too.

Welcome back to week 3.

You may not be ready at this stage to put yourself forward for a job, or you might be building up to it. Either way, it’s a process that you should take time to prepare for, as this video with our developers shows.

You’ll hear our developers discuss their feelings as they approached the application process. As you watch, think about any tactics they used for setting themselves goals or deadlines.

How about you – how do you feel about putting yourself forward for a job? It’s fine if you’re not ready yet.
