Hot Licks 3 on a minor seventh

Let’s look at some hot licks on a minor seventh. We’ve looked at hot licks on a seventh chord, on a major seventh. Let’s do a minor seventh now.

You know the procedure: I’ve prepared an iRealB playalong for C - we’ll do it in the key of C - so for C minor7. I’ll do one part of it where I play C minor7 in the lower position - that’s first inversion - and then one section where I play in the upper position - third inversion.

Usual thing: I’ll play a phrase that lasts a bar - at a sort of slow medium tempo - and then your role is to echo the phrase and try and get it right. I’ll try and start off by playing something simple and then perhaps get more complicated both rhythmically and thematically as we get into it. I’m just going to use the Dorian mode - C minor7, Dorian mode - B flat major scale. As I say, this is something which you really want to try and use to help, in part, develop your ear.
