Learn to be a good listener. And we don’t mean just with your ears, but with all the senses available to you. By engaging with all of your senses, you will gain a deeper understanding of your user and their needs.

Sometimes people can find it hard to express themselves or explain why something isn’t working for them. When we observe our users’ behaviour, we can tap into a wealth of valuable information that can help inform us on our journey.

Motivation is the reason(s) your user will act in a particular way. You need to ask yourself ‘why would our user want to try our product/continue to use our product?’

Who are the surrounding people that influence their behaviour? Understanding these people is just as important to understanding your user.

Do you know what the user thinks of your company/product? Why do they feel this way? Is your message clear?

Have you considered all aspects of your product’s design? Is the product accessible? Is the colour contrast sufficient? Is the packaging easy to open? Environmentally sustainable? There are many variables you will need to consider when thinking about your UX.

A simple guideline for having good empathy for your users is: don’t assume, but ask.
