Welcome to the course
4.2
AMY MORAN: Hi. I’m Amy from Oxfam. And welcome to Make Change Happen. People all over the world are making change. And we want to give you the skills to be the best at that. So welcome to this online course, helping you to make change happen. This course has been put together in partnership by us here at Oxfam and the Open University. And the aim is to connect and inspire change makers, just like you. In just eight weeks, you’ll explore ideas and concepts on how change has happened in the past. You’ll learn about the practical tools and tactics being used so you can make change happen right now.
35.1
You’ll learn what drives change and how identities can affect the change we want to see. You’ll better understand the context you’re working in and how power dynamics and complex systems affect change. You’ll hear how you can build your own power through collective action and what it means to be an effective leader of change. And you’ll learn how to identify and expand your sphere of influence, select the right tactics, and develop strong narratives. We’ll share case studies with you from around the world, powerful stories about different kinds of social, political, environmental, and rights-based change. And we’ll hear from change makers, working today, talking about their own experiences, how they’ve dealt with the challenges in their own change projects.
75.3
But we really want to hear from you. We know a lot of you will already be part of movements or community groups who have taken action to make change happen. So there’s lots of opportunities, through discussions and activities in the course, for you to share your own perspectives and experiences and to connect with other activists and change makers around the globe. Remember, the more you participate, the more you’ll get out of it. There’s opportunities to apply the learning to your real life. And we encourage you to actively apply it to the change that you want to see.
102.5
A change process that you’re already working on now or a part of could be something you’re interested in doing for your community or learning more about. So this is a chance to work through an actual plan while building your confidence to get out there and do it.
119.5
We know this course is a big commitment, but so is change. You’ll come away from this course feeling better equipped and even more inspired to work on change for social justice and equality where you are.

Welcome to this course! By joining us on this journey we know that you are someone who is interested in making change happen.

As we begin this course, the world is involved in a massive response to the COVID-19 health emergency. How governments and citizens respond, and then learn from this event, could be a critically important opportunity for changemakers seeking to help positive change happen for people and the planet.

You may be new to this area, or you may already be active as a changemaker in your community. You want to deepen your understanding of how change happens, to sharpen your skills in creating change that really sticks, and to share your experience and learn from others who are working on different change actions around the world.

Whatever your concern or interest is in wanting to see change happen, we hope you will benefit and find motivation from your engagement in this course, at a time when we are facing a range of social and climate change-related emergencies.

In this video Amy Moran talks about what to expect from the course and how to get the most out of it.

There will be an opportunity to introduce yourself in an upcoming step.
