New Zealand Wine reviewed the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand questionnaires to enhance alignment, robustness, and a focus on quantitative questions.
It is fundamental to set goals, establish baselines, and measure progress to continually improve if you are dedicated to sustainability. “If you can measure it, you can manage it” is a great mantra for everyone.
New Zealand Wine has six focus areas, which are aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals. This is the same framework used in Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.

- Pest & Disease
- Waste
- Climate Change
- People
These focus areas and overarching goals guided the review. For instance, the old scorecards were not set up to track progress towards to goal of “carbon neutrality by 2050” or “zero waste to landfill by 2050”, Changes had to be made to track progress towards goals.
Changeing Scorecards to Questionnaires
New questionnaires were developed that reflected the six focus areas and key components within each focus area. Increased quantitative reporting enabled more benchmarking reports to be produced and these help growers measure progress against themselves in past seasons and against their other vineyards.
