How does the Skills Builder framework work?

The Skills Builder framework breaks down skills into steps which can be mastered one at a time by students. Watch this video explaining how it works.
The framework takes each Skills Builder skill and breaks them down into 16 steps, going from step zero through to step 15. The normal expectation would be that a student would work through the steps from step zero in order. This reflects the insight from the first session that it can be difficult to master some of the more complex steps if some of the earlier ones have not already been mastered. We’ll start by looking at the framework for team building. Before we begin, make sure you have downloaded the Skills Builder toolkit, which contains the full framework.
Look at the teamwork page in the Skills Builder framework. Can you identify the skill definition, explanation of progression in skills development, steps, statements?
The first thing you need to do is to learn how to navigate the framework page. Let’s look at teamwork. Go to this page in the framework. Each skill has a definition here, and underneath that an explanation of the progression of that skill. Then there are two columns with the step number and the statement. The statements help individuals understand their own skills.
It’s important to remember that these steps are seen as a long term progression, something that students achieve over the course of their schooling. So step 0 to 5 might be a primary age expectation.
5 to 10 might be a secondary expectation.
And then the remaining steps are as a graduate or an experienced employee expectation.
So if we take teamwork as an example, the initial steps are about individuals fulfilling expectations around being positive, behaving appropriately, being timely and reliable, and taking responsibility. The next steps focus on a contribution to a team through group decision making, recognising the values of others’ ideas and encouraging others to contribute, too. After that individuals improve their teams through managing conflict and building relationships beyond the immediate team. And then in the final stages of teamwork individuals focus on how they influence their team by suggesting improvements and learning lessons from problems.
Think about the students you teach. Where would you expect them to be on this framework?

The Skills Builder framework is a tool designed to break down core skills into small steps which can be mastered one at a time by students. So how does it work?

To begin, the framework takes each skill and breaks it down into sixteen steps, from step 0 through to step 15. The steps are progressive, so it makes sense for students to start at the beginning and work through in order. This reflects what you learned in Week 1 – it can be difficult to learn some of the more complex steps if some of the earlier ones have not already been mastered.

Over to you

Choose one of the other skills from the framework. Look at the step descriptions and think about how a student might work through the different steps. When would you expect the steps to be achieved?
