Introduction to the Course

Introduction to the course (video)
Hi, welcome to the course. I’m Mike Butler, a tutor at the University of Law. Previously, I was a partner in an international law firm, and then a general counsel. I’ve spent over 25 years advising clients about the laws which apply to the internet and the use of data. This short course asks, are our laws fit to deal with cyberspace? It’s a big question. So it helps to break down this question by looking at three key elements of cyberspace each week. This week we look at the laws relating to data, and in particular personal data. In week two, we look at how copyright works and the challenges with online platforms.
And the last week, we look at the rise of artificial intelligence. Throughout the course, we ask you to consider whether our laws work in an era of a global, ubiquitous technology? Should we have stronger control over our personal data? Do we need better laws for dealing with social media companies? Should we regulate AI? The aim of this course is to give you some structure around how the laws in cyberspace apply. Which helps you to address these questions. You will appreciate the laws here are complex. We look at these laws and the ethical issues relating to cyberspace in depth on the University of Law’s groundbreaking MSc in legal technology. So let’s get started this week with the laws of data.
Good luck with the course and I really hope you enjoy it.
