England has had a long history of public entertainments. These ranged from jugglers and minstrels to larger theatrical spectacles such as mystery plays and mummers (masked or costumed performers who often accompanied festivals). These types of entertainment often accompanied specific days in the calendar. The reign of Elizabeth I also saw the emergence of more theatres and professional theatre companies.

In this film, the last of the course and which features a short performance from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Chief Curator Dr Tracy Borman speaks to Professor Thomas Betteridge, Dean of the College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences at Brunel University London to explore the history of English theatre and its influences during the Elizabethan era. They also delve into the work of William Shakespeare, arguably England’s most influential playwright and his royal associations with the Elizabethan court.

The film finishes with historical interpreter Toby Lord performing Puck’s famous speech ‘If we shadows have offended’ from Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

  2. Consider the distinction between what is perceived as ‘highbrow’ and ‘lowbrow’ entertainment in Tudor times. Do you think theatre is seen differently today?
  3. Do you enjoy visiting the theatre? What theatrical performances have you enjoyed the most?
