Introduction to Week 1

Monica, Lead Educator introduces week 1 of the course.
9.1
Hello and welcome to Week 1. I’m Kate, and I will be your guide throughout this course. This week, we will be looking at the different contexts in which refugees are being supported with their learning. For many, this means learning English or another language, so that they can settle into their new community. We’ll also be looking at some of the difficulties that they may face and developing communication strategies, which will enable people from different cultures, languages, and backgrounds to interact successfully with one another. We’re building a community of volunteers here. Some of you will already be English teachers or teachers of another subject. Many of you will come from completely different backgrounds.

There will be lots of opportunities throughout this course for you to interact with one another, for you to like, comment, and share your experiences. Together with the course moderators, I’ll be supporting you throughout this course. So let’s find out a little bit more about one another. Go to the next Step and tell us who you are, where you’re from, and how you hope to be volunteering.

Welcome to the start of our course ‘Volunteering with Refugees’. This course will provide you with information and strategies to help you support refugees.

In the first week of the course we’ll look at the diverse backgrounds and needs of refugees and the different contexts in which refugees are learning or using English.

In Week 2 we’ll take a closer look at possible barriers to learning, and consider some affective factors that you need to be aware of when working with refugees. You’ll also learn how to use a specific lesson framework to provide learning support.

In Week 3 we’ll look at resources you can use, and consider some practical strategies and techniques for helping learners to improve their confidence in using English.
