What does a power law relationship involve?

In a power law relationship between two qualities, relative change to one variable (x) leads to a proportional relative change in the other variable (y), yet a small change to the first quality can result in a large change to the second. For example, if we double the length (x) of one side of a square, its area (y) quadruples.
