Skip to 0 minutes and 15 seconds I’d like to talk with you about one of my favorite topics, tourism impact, and this is been my main area of academic interesting research. In this particular presentation, I’d like to share with you a number of things, such as what are the impacts? What does the nature of these impacts? What are they? And in particular,I’d like to focus particularly on social and culture impact. Leading from this I want to look at the nature of tourist-host community interactions. And lastly but not least to look at how resident react toward tourism.

Skip to 1 minute and 1 second So what is an impact? We look at the simple dictionary definition, it simply says the effect or impression of one thing upon another. So in the contact of tourism,we talk about tourism upon people, the community or the environment.

Skip to 1 minute and 24 seconds When we look at the nature of the impacts, it could be negative,it could be neutral or positive. If it’s negative,it means this impact are harmful and bad. If it’s neutral then the impact could be fair,it’s OK. If it’s positive, then it will be beneficial and good. When we think about the nature of impacts, we need to understand and recognize they are inevitable and unavoidable. So what are the summary issues that we need to consider? So there are some questions we need to ask ourselves, how do we deal with this impact? How do we minimize the impact particularly the negative ones? And then we need to ask ourselves, do the benefit outweigh the cost or vice versa?

Skip to 2 minutes and 21 seconds Because if the benefits do outweigh the costs, then it’s likely that people and community will have positive perceptions. On the other hand, if the cost outweighs the benefit, then people allowed to develop negative perceptions in opinions. Tourists go home, is this what you want to see in your community? Certainly not!

Skip to 2 minutes and 52 seconds So what are the impacts of tourism? Note here, there are four that had been mentioned, environmental, economic, social and cultural. Now if you look at any standard textbook addressing and reporting on impact of tourism, this is free you typically find. In my research,it came across two additional types of impacts, crowding and congestion, and the other one is services. We’ll talk about this later on in more detail.

Skip to 3 minutes and 34 seconds Social impacts, this refers to the changes in the lives of people, who live in destination communities associated with tourism, it also refers to changes which result from personal contact between tourists providers and hosts. In addition, what changes occur as a result of social exchange between the hosts and the guests.

Skip to 4 minutes and 5 seconds Cultural impacts we are talking about changes in the art, the artifacts, customs, rituals and architecture of a people that result from tourism activity or development. When we look at the social and cultural impacts, I’d like to ask you a question and you may want to consider this in the contact of your own community and destination where you live. When teaching tourism, I shared with my students in Hong Kong and asked them these questions, how does tourism affect will change my way of life in Hong Kong? You need to say to the student how does tourism impacts upon your life.

Skip to 4 minutes and 50 seconds For tourism management student, certainly you know tourism impacts upon them in a big way because they are studying tourism, so that in their future upon graduation they’ll been employed and then they livelihood from tourism. I then asked them what are some of the social impacts of tourism affecting Hong Kong. And one of the big challenges that faced by Hong Kong is relate to the large number of mainland tourists who visit. At that times, the unsocial and uncivilized behavior of some of the mainland tourists and affects the quality of life of the local Hong Kong residents. And thirdly,we ask when we talked about cultural impacts, what are they? How does this affect Hong Kong?

Skip to 5 minutes and 48 seconds I’d liked to talk next about crowding and congestion impacts. This type of impacts you do not typically find reported or mentioned in textbooks. Because there are two aspects to these types of impacts, one is the physical. So we are referring here to the crowds and congestion which may restrict your activities. Increase noise, resources are been strain and carrying capacity has been exceeded. And if you are in a community, you know withdrawing it’s common, it may be increased driving hazard because of crowding and congestion. Besides the physical, we also need examine and look at the things from psychological and social perspective. How does the crowding and congestion affect your enjoyment of the tourism experience, the tourists seeking? How does it affect tourist lifestyle?

Skip to 6 minutes and 56 seconds If there is crowding and congestion, and argument break out due to cue jumbling and pushing and things like this. You may upset people, so that they don’t have an enjoyable and memorable experience. Some people react crowding and congestion with one of the tolerance, I’ll put out with it but this is a must say, so therefore I would tolerant. Another topic of respond is withdrawal. Oh,too many people! I don’t want to be involved with the crowds and the congestion and they just withdrawal and don’t bother becoming involved or visiting the attraction.

Skip to 7 minutes and 46 seconds The second of these special types of impacts is the service impacts. What is the physical ability of local services to meet users demand? So what do we mean by here? Tourist come to a community and destination, they throw out their rubbish and their trash, someone is gonna cleaning that out. Who cleans that out and who pays for it? It’s the local residents. If there are too many tourists, you may affect the quality of local services, and then it impacts upon the financial resources of the local service provider.
