Inspiring Young People In STEM: Resources and diversity

This course is part of the Inspiring Young People In STEM program, which will enable you to inspire a love of science, technology, engineering and maths in young people.

Learn how to ensure all young people get a chance to explore STEM subjects

Increasing diversity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics is vital, it’s the only way STEM industries can ensure they are addressing the full range of the world’s problems. So how do we improve diversity? One answer: working with young people.

On this course you will learn how to find and adapt resources for STEM activities. You will explore current research on diversity and learning how to engage every young person in practical STEM activities by understanding different audiences and contexts.

Skip to 0 minutes and 0 seconds[Angela] Are you passionate about science? Are you developing new technologies or collaborating in engineering projects? Are you aware of how mathematics is integral to your work? Could you be the inspiration for the next generation of scientists and engineers? [Michael] We know that engaging with volunteers in industry, such as STEM Ambassadors, can have a real positive impact upon young people. Educators can sometimes struggle to help students see the connection between the curriculum and the real world. STEM Ambassadors can provide a link between the classroom and the workplace inspiring students from a range of different abilities and backgrounds to consider following STEM careers they may have never dreamed of before.

Skip to 0 minutes and 47 seconds[Angela] By participating on this course, you will develop your knowledge and skills to identify and choose appropriate STEM resources for diverse audiences. We’ll introduce you to a range of STEM resources which have been quality checked and especially curated for volunteers, and support you in tailoring resources to the young people you work with. This course is the first in a series of four that will guide you through resourcing, planning, delivering and reviewing practical STEM activities. [Michael] Engaging young people through practical STEM activities enriches the curriculum and can help to embed learning and encourage further discovery.

Skip to 1 minute and 27 secondsWhether you are a STEM Ambassador or working elsewhere in the voluntary sector, delivering an activity in a school, community group or outreach project, channel your enthusiasm for STEM and inspire young people. [Angela] So, how can you convey your insight into a subject to a diverse audience? Join us online now to find out.
