Skip to 0 minutes and 25 seconds Hi, how are you, welcome back. Last time, we talk something about spatial structure or how to organize all the resources together in a map. Today, we will talk something about product. Do you remember product? Very important. It’s a major purpose we make a tourism planning. Because it’s so important, actually we talk about product every chapter, every part of this course. But this course, this part of the lesson is to tell the product classification. In the spatial structure we put product in different parts of the region. In the market part, we talk about what kind of product could meet the demand of the market.

Skip to 1 minute and 20 seconds But, when we talk about all those things in different parts of the course, what does the product itself mean? Here we will share my understanding with you about the product. Basically, we could divide product into two parts. One is recreation product. Another is tourism product. What is the difference between these two kinds of the product? Recreation product for me it is the public product, a public goods that government should supply free or at a low price to the people. Because in the city, in the Athens Charter, people considerrecreation is one of the four basic functions which include the living, the transportation, the factory and the recreation.

Skip to 2 minutes and 20 seconds So, the recreation for the city is the urban space or recreation facility offered free or all the door open to the people at any time without any cost because people have already submitted the tax to the government. So, recreation product is very popular in cities. But sometimes national park also has the role to supply the recreation product to the people. So, we often talk about recreation in a national park, but other kinds of the product cannot be classified as a recreation product. Because it needs very heavy investment and could only be offered by private sector like resort, like spa, like hotel or something like that.

Skip to 3 minutes and 16 seconds So the shopping center, the entertainment and skiing, also I think all this kind of things are tourism products. You want to pay something and then you get the opportunity to enjoy the product. It is the tourism product. Ok, actually we talk about tourism planning here, we mainly talk something about tourism product rather than recreation. It’s another story. We have maybe recreation planning in the future. From the aspect of the tourism product, we also could analyze or classify the product into different packages. In the package, in all the’baskets’ put every watermelon, put the grape, put the apple or put every beach together. So, tourism product could pick this one, a banana, or not a banana, banana is sightseeing. Another one.

Skip to 4 minutes and 26 seconds This is an apple. What is apple? Apple is holiday making. That means you stay in the hotel, or stay in the homestay for a long time. What is sightseeing? Move, move, move. So it’s very different. And also we have some products like business or MICE. That means we travel to go to an academic conference. This is a business travel. We go to some Expos. We have incentive. We have meeting. We have conference. All those put together is MICE. Also we have some Olympic Games or summer Olympic or winter Olympic. We consider it’s a megaevent, all these things put together are business travel or business tourism. Sometimes people don’t like taking a business travel as a tourism.

Skip to 5 minutes and 26 seconds But some professors like when you go to a national park or to see the Great Wall or the Forbidden City and then you are a tourist. You travel for business. Oh it’s no. But a calling to the concept and definition by UNWTO, people travel for more than one day and less than one year, and for many purposes like pleasure for sightseeing for holiday making and business. So, business is concluded in the definition by the UNWTO. So, here we also consider the business travel as a kind of product. And also they are not Interested in the big population but show special interest for special things. Some people only go to some places that archaeologist like go to.

Skip to 6 minutes and 25 seconds Som people only like to climb mountains higher than 4000 above the sea level. So, we called them special interest tourism. It’s a special kind of product. Today, it is a special interest. Maybe two or five years later, it will become the mess tourism product. So, we also take it into our attention. Also we have some green tourism or good tourism or responsible tourism. We put all those things together as an alternative tourism. It is another counter part of mass tourism. Mass tourism means everybody goes to the same place to do the same thing in the same steps. It¡¯s mass tourism.

Skip to 7 minutes and 18 seconds On the other side the counter part is alternative tourism It means that, ‘oh, I don’t like going together with all the others guided by the tour guide. I want to go by myself, to do very special things, but the side is also very big. So, we call it alternative tourism. We put all the things together with this figure. We call it tourism product tree. This tree is very simple but very interesting. Every tree has a root. The longer and deeper the root is the taller and stronger the tree will be. What is the root? The product root is considered as what we have defined before. Attraction, facility and service. It is the root of the tree.

Skip to 8 minutes and 12 seconds The item, the major pillar of the tree consists of different branches. Each branch presents each kind of product. On the left side, we have the first category of tourism product sightseeing. Sightseeing could be divided into more details. like cultural sightseeing, natural sightseeing or something like that. Mainstream product of the signer is leisure, recreation and holiday making. It also consider many things like the beach, the hot spring, the hilly stay of rural area and something like that. And the third one is MICE, business. And the rightmost branch is consists of special interest tourism and eco-tourism something like that.

Skip to 9 minutes and 8 seconds As a conclusion of this class, I should share with you that the major thing you want to understand is that tourism product could be divided into many many different parts. But the major part is sightseeing holiday making and special interest tourism and alternative tourism and don’t forget business travel. Thank you.
