Reuniting families

Reuniting families video from Uganda
Care 4 Kids is an orphanage that looks after 53 children. Their approach as a foundation is to help them transform and place the children back in to their families. Because children are better off in families, where they learn their values, they learn their cultures and norms. They previously had trouble trying to persuade the parents to accept back their children. Child’s i Foundation social workers, together with a Care 4 Kids social work team, are working together to thoroughly assist families to make sure that they’re able to provide for their children, care for them, and help us in planning for reunification. It’s a complex process, and if done badly, can put a child’s life at risk.
We invited Rafiki African Ministries, which is an orphanage in Kampala, that has successfully reunited its children. We encourage them to come with a family, so they are able to share their experience of having their children back. And also let the families understand that the children need a sense of belonging, which is only in a family.
Their most fear is that the organisation is going to leave everything after resettling their kids. But the organisation continues to take care of these children. They provide fees, they check on the kids, So just encouraging them to welcome their kids back home. My children came into Care 4 Kids by the grace of God. Their dad had passed away, and I was left helpless, they were not even going to school. After some time my children were brought back home. I was worried about how to provide for them but I was reassured that they would continue to pay his school fees and support the child within the family. I am happy that my daughter is moving home.
She has spent a long time in the orphanage; she has never met her relatives at home. She knows nothing about her culture but I will teach her all these things and help her understand our culture.
Parents had to share with other parents from the organisation, and this has cleared their mind about reuniting with their children. And we have also kept our promise that we made about supporting them through education, which has been successful.
That is a culture song. It was taught to me by a friend at school. It calls upon parents to take care of their children. I always play it when I’m at Care 4 Kids.
It’s the beginning of a new dream. A dream where the social workers would be able to reunite the children with their families. But also to follow up and find out, are these children thriving? Are they happy? Are they being looked after? We are hoping that every child will celebrate with their family, like any other child all over the world.

This video was kindly provided by Child’s i Foundation in Uganda. Child’s i Foundation was founded in 2009, and works to resettle children living in residential institutions with extended, foster and adoptive families.

This video shows the work of an organisation ‘Care 4 Kids’ that has been offering services to vulnerable children in Jinja District in Eastern Uganda. Child’s i Foundation has been working with the organisation by arranging training and helping to raise community awareness about the importance of families in a child’s development. As a result, Care 4 Kids is now reuniting children with their families.
