This step will guide us through options for external usage of data on Power Platform, whether through exporting or through external applications connecting and drawing data using SQL and third-party APIs.

Options for exporting data

  • Export to Microsoft Excel from within the model-driven apps
  • Export to Microsoft Excel from web.powerapps.com
  • Using Microsoft Power Automate to create CSV or Excel files
  • Configuring export of data to Azure SQL

Exporting for Excel

The following options exist for exporting data from a model-driven app to Excel

  • Open in Excel Online, within the Dynamics 365 window
  • Static Worksheet
  • Static Worksheet (Page only)
  • Dynamic Worksheet, which maintains an active connection with Common Data Service (CDS) this requires Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Outlook to function
  • Dynamic PivotTable

Security

Export to Excel is an all-or-nothing privilege for a security role. If they have it, they can export any data they see in a view. Once exported it is outside of the protection of the Common Data Service security.
