Options for exporting data. You can use export to Microsoft Excel from within the model-driven app. You can export to Microsoft Excel from within web.powerapps.com. You can use Microsoft Flow to create CSV or Excel. And configuring export of data via Azure SQL. For the bottom two, using Microsoft Flow and export to SQL Azure, a detailed discussion is beyond the scope of this class. Exporting data. There are several options for exporting common data services data in a model driven app to Excel. This is a favourite feature for many users as they are usually somewhat used to Excel, and can better see the value of holding the data in the common data service. Excel Online. The worksheet can now be used for anything you would usually use Excel for. Dynamic worksheets. Maintain a link between CDS and Dynamics worksheet. To view and refresh Dynamic data, Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Outlook must be installed for this feature to work. Let’s look at security. It’s controlled by security roles. It’s all or nothing privilege. If the user has it, they can export anything that they can see in a view. Once exported, the data is outside the security model and no longer protected by common data service security. Be careful.

The following options exist for exporting data from a model-driven app to Excel

  • Open in Excel Online, within the Dynamics 365 window
  • Static Worksheet
  • Static Worksheet (Page only)
  • Dynamic Worksheet, which maintains an active connection with Common Data Service (CDS) this requires Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Outlook to function
  • Dynamic PivotTable

Security

Export to Excel is an all-or-nothing privilege for a security role. If they have it, they can export any data they see in a view. Once exported it is outside of the protection of the Common Data Service security.
