This week we’ve picked out some resources that can be found on the National STEM Learning Centre website. Sometimes registration is required to access specific files – this is quick and easy.

Task Maths

This series of mathematics textbooks and teacher books map progress against a range of KS3 and KS4 content through ‘themed’ topics and investigations- many give opportunities for extension and creative student input.

Chemistry for the Gifted and Talented

A valuable resource packed with different approaches to activities to encourage students to think about and evaluate the chemistry they learn at secondary school.

STRATA Schemes

Scheme of work and an assessment/recording framework for primary science, this addresses the particular issues faced by the teachers of students with special needs. It includes a comprehensive range of activities that are both age appropriate and sufficient to meet the needs of the whole ability range for students

Using frames to support learning

Helen Walker and Karen Ashforth from Birley Community School share their ideas to assist students with special educational needs in their understanding of key ideas through a structured and visual approach. The idea can be used equally well in primary and secondary, and across subjects.

The department developed an A3 laminated writing frame which would overlay an A4 picture to stimulate discussion and guide writing. A template for the frame is provided in the appendix together with some practical tips.
