Food choices, appetite and the environment

Watch Helen introduce an activity that explores food choices, appetite and the environment.

PROFESSOR HELEN TRUBY: To explore the area around food choices and appetite in the environment, we’ve designed a little vending machine activity for you to do. What we’d like you to do is to note the time where it is, wherever you are now, and take a couple of items in the vending machine that you actually feel like you’d like to eat right now, and then also tell us how hungry you are, and also the time of day it is with you. So from this activity, we’d really like to be able to feed back to you some data around how, usually, people– what times of day people usually feel hungry, what sorts of foods they’re choosing.

Talking point

Within the Comments, consider sharing with other learners your responses to the survey. If you chose not to complete the survey you can still participate by responding to the following questions.

  • What time is it?
  • How long ago did you last eat?
  • How hungry do you feel?
  • How tired do you feel right now?
  • What food and drink would you most like to consume right now?

You might like to take some time to read comments made by other learners, and if you find these comments interesting, respond to them.

Remember you can also ‘Like’ comments or follow other learners throughout the course.

If you are interested, you can choose to complete surveys that will help researchers at Monash develop a better understanding of appetite and food choices.

Read About the surveys in Food as Medicine to find out how survey data is going to be used, then if taking part in research sounds like something that interests you, return to this step and complete the survey. Return to this step to share your thoughts with other learners.
