Wrapping up week 1

In this article read about what we have learned so far and what we will focus on in week 2 of the course.
Well done for reaching the end of Week 1! We hope you enjoyed it.

This week we looked at how technologies can reinforce gender inequalities. You learned about the role gender has played historically within technology, and explored why we must create gender-inclusive technologies to create more equal futures. We introduced you to key concepts including intersectionality and explored inclusive language.

We discussed inequalities in the technology industry and Jennifer shared advice about how we can be accountable for gender inclusion as individuals and organisations. We also explored positive and negative examples of gender inclusion/exclusion within technology.

Next week, we will start to explore gender within design processes, from assembling diverse design teams to implementation, feedback and testing. You’ll hear directly from Cami on how they have developed an inclusive research practice, which they define as Trans Competent Research. You’ll also hear from Hera about how to design for situations known as edge cases.

To wrap up the week, we’d love to hear what your biggest take away has been. Is it something relating to the tech industry or are you more taken with some of the broader concepts we’ve introduced? Share your thoughts with each other below.
