Welcome back, it’s week 3, the last week before you move on to the Anti-Racist Approaches in Technology course.

So, last week we began to bring gender-inclusive approaches to the design process. This week, we will begin by looking at gender-inclusive practices for managing data and privacy. Then discussing how gender inequalities are perpetuated through advertising, giving you the tools to understand how ads are targeted in specific ways. We will discuss how companies use media to represent people with different identities and whether they are attempts create real change, or whether they are a form of tokenism. As we enter the final stages of the course we will be looking to the future, discussing how we can advocate for inclusive practices and speculating about potential futures that might help us reimagine our present.

By the end of this week you will be able to:

  • Develop best practice for managing data and privacy.
  • Reflect on the way that advertising perpetuates gender inequality
  • Advocate for gender inclusion within technology
  • Summarise key elements of gender-inclusive design
  • Apply gender-inclusive design processes in your own context

Congratulations on reaching this far in the course. We’d love to know what you’re hoping to gain from our final week together? Share your thoughts below with other learners.
