Concluding remarks

In this video Melania add some concluding remarks about the GDPR.
8.1
Dear learners, congratulations. Together, we have reached the last step of our GDPR course. We have covered a variety of topics, from basic GDPR concepts to processing principles, rights of data subjects, obligations for controllers and processors, enforcement mechanisms, and liabilities and sanctions. We have invited you to reflect on the GDPR’s new data protection rules and to practise your knowledge in various ways. We believe after following our course, you will now have a good idea of what the GDPR is about, how this regulation may influence your life and business, how you can use it to protect your personal data, and how you may need to adapt your processing operations and practices to GDPR requirements so that you can avoid any future hassle.
57.4
As we mentioned from the very beginning, we have focused only on the principle concepts and rules and those that are most relevant to data subjects, controllers, and processors. In a relatively short course like this, it is impossible to cover the content of the GDPR in detail or to go through all the related GDPR provisions. The provisions on specific processing situations concerning freedom of expression and information, for example, or processing of national identification numbers, processing in the context of employment, or obligations of secrecy are also very interesting indeed. We hope, however, that you have enjoyed our take on the GDPR. While we may have answered some of your questions, you may have even more questions in return.
103
For example, how does data protection by design and by default actually work in processing practices? How would the GDPR eventually be enforced on controllers and processors that are not established in the EU considering growing conflicts in cyber jurisdiction. And how does the right to be forgotten actually work in today’s digital world? Many of these questions still do not have definite answers. It will all depend on our future data processing practices and on future legal developments in case law that will further explore and clarify those questions. It will also depend on how important we find data protection and privacy for our lives and communities if they conflict with other fundamental values.
145.8
The most important learning objective of this course was for you to develop your own thoughts on the GDPR and to find your own way in dealing with the GDPR. Data subjects should be aware of their rights and ready to invoke them. For data controllers and processors, action should be taken now to incorporate appropriate GDPR compliance measures into daily practices to prepare for May 25th, 2018. Many thanks for joining our course.

Congratulations for finishing the course!
