MEREL HUISMAN: I just switched institutions, but at both my former hospital and my current hospital, we use a single detection tool. So this is narrow AI. So a detection task– for example, for pulmonary embolisms– the automatic detection. And so that within 30 minutes after the patient receives the scan for pulmonary embolisms, we get a warning if it’s positive.

SOTIRIOS BISDASO: Currently, we use AI in the dementia diagnosis. We acquire volumetric scans of the brains, and correlate the results with the ones from the normal population, in order to detect deviations from the normal that can substantiate the diagnosis of dementia in our patients.

ERIK RANSCHAERT: The first solution that we started using was an algorithm to analyse chest X-rays, which is still one of the examinations that is most frequently performed in a radiology department. We have learned about the potential use of artificial intelligence in healthcare. In order to learn about the different kinds of AI solutions that are already used in daily practice, we can also ask experts to tell us about the systems they are using or marketing.

We went around and asked healthcare professionals to tell us how they are using AI in their work. Industry representatives also share the solutions they have marketed and that are currently used in hospitals.
