“怎么+verb/adjective”ask about the reason for something, indicate surprise or astonishment

For example:

If your classmate David always attends class on time, but he didn’t show up today. You must feel surprised and want to know the reason.

In this case, 怎么could be used, you can ask今天大卫怎么没来上课？

Dialogue 1

A：你知道小王今天什么时候来学校吗？Nǐ zhīdào Xiǎo Wáng jīntiān shénme shíhou lái xuéxiào ma?

Do you know when Xiao Wang will come to school today?

B：他已经来了。Tā yǐjīng lái le.

He is already here.

A：你怎么知道他来了？ Nǐ zěnme zhīdào tā lái le?

How do you know?

B：我在门外看见他的自行车了。Wǒ zài mén wài kànjiàn tā de zìxíngchē le.

I saw his bike outside the door.
