Today we will learn another usage of the modal adverb“还”, indicating the continuation of an action or a state.

Language points

The Modal Adverb “还” indicates the continuation of an action or a state.

The negative form is “还没”.

For example:

你怎么还在睡觉?Nǐ zěnme hái zài shuìjiào?

你怎么还没起床?Nǐ zěnme hái méi qǐchuáng?

他还在教室学习呢。Tā hái zài jiàoshì xuéxí ne.

你怎么还没吃饭?Nǐ zěnme hái méi chīfàn?

We have learnt two usage of 还:

还 is used before an adjective, means that something is passable or acceptable, for example:

同学们昨天的考试还可以。

这件衣服还行,不太大。

还 indicates the continuation of an action of a state, for example:

下课了,他还在看书呢。

明天我还想去游泳。

你怎么还没睡觉呢?

Dialogue 1

A:大卫回来了吗?Dàwèi huílai le ma?

Is David back?

B:没有,他还在教室学习呢。Méiyǒu, tā hái zài jiàoshì xuéxí ne.

No. He is still studying in the classroom.

A:已经9点多了,他怎么还在学习?Yǐjīng jiǔ diǎn duō le, tā zěnme hái zài xuéxí?

It’s after 9 o’clock. Why is he still studying?

B:明天有考试,他说今天要好好准备。Míngtiān yǒu kǎoshì, tā shuō jīntiān yào hǎohāo zhǔnbèi.

There will be a test tomorrow. He said he’ll work hard in preparation for it today.

A:大卫回来了吗?

B:没有,他还在教室学习呢。

A:已经9点多了,他怎么还在学习?

B:明天有考试,他说今天要好好准备。
