Consultation 2 – physical activity

Watch a physiotherapist establish a physical activity plan for the PEAK program to help people with knee osteoarthritis
SPEAKER 1: Oh and, Paige if we think about what you were going to read, which is physical activity page six, it talks about how much activity someone should be doing.
SPEAKER 2: Yeah.
SPEAKER 1: Yeah, and you’ve probably heard before what the government sort of suggests we should be doing as an amount of physical activity each week?
SPEAKER 2: Yes there’s different things. Someone says 8,000 steps, some says 10,000 steps.
SPEAKER 1: Yeah so 10,000 is the high number, yeah?
SPEAKER 2: Yeah.
SPEAKER 1: For knee arthritis we know that being able to get over 6,000 steps a day on average differentiates people who have more knee disability at two years versus less. So if you’re under that 6,000 mark you’re more likely to be disabled with your knee pain in two years time. So like I said, that’s the first threshold. You’re already hitting that which is fantastic. I think we should probably be aiming for close to the 10,000 for you in the long term.
SPEAKER 2: Right.
SPEAKER 1: But the other guideline they have is 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per week.
SPEAKER 1: Which is like 30 minutes five days a week. So, if we think about a goal for you, sort of 7,790. That’s a big job.
What do you think about– and I reckon it should be relatively achievable for you– what do you think about trying to increase your average daily step count to 8,500 steps?
SPEAKER 2: OK, I’ll give it a go.
SPEAKER 1: You’ll give it a go?
SPEAKER 2: I’ll give it a go.
SPEAKER 1: It might mean that on top of your cafe days that you have to do a little extra walk.
SPEAKER 1: And particularly you’ll be looking at it on the low days. You might have to add in a 10 to 15 minute walk.
SPEAKER 1: Yeah, and I think 8,500 would be a great next step for you. It’s certainly achievable. It’s only a 10% increase. So you’re knee is going to cope with it. It’s just about have you got the time to do it when maybe your step count is being a bit funny on workdays?
SPEAKER 2: Yeah, no I mean to say even the days at the cafe I can do a couple of laps around the shopping centre. Or something like that, yeah.
SPEAKER 1: I think that might even be a good thing. Just to clear your head. Get out of the cafe sort of for a second. And just get a real sort of walk on will be good for your knee.
