We have a range of apps for you to try out this week, and as usual they reflect the varied topics we have covered: assessment and exams, writing, and getting ready to come to the UK.

Try  out  some of the apps that interest you to see if  any of them  are relevant and useful. Some are easier to use than others. They are currently free unless indicated as a paid app.   

Apps for your studies

For more practice with academic writing, take a look at Academic Writing in English (AWE). It’s a complete course in academic writing from University College of London.

The Academic Phrasebank from the University of Manchester is a general resource for academic writers, with useful phrases organised by function.

Exam revision is hard work, so why not take advantage of apps that can might assist you? In addition to the apps we’ve looked at in previous weeks, you might find Mindmapping tools helpful. SimpleMind and Xmind can be used to organise your notes visually into colourful maps of ideas and concepts.

GoConqur offers mind maps as well as additional tools. It is designed to help you organise your studies and your revision by giving you a place to upload notes, flash cards, mind maps and quizzes, and to create your own study planner.

StudyBlue allows you to create your own material and flash-card quizzes to test yourself while you study.

Apps for living in the UK

Perhaps you have already heard that the weather is unpredictable. For daily weather forecasts use the Met Office Weather app.

If you’re going to be travelling by train, download the National Rail app for timetables and fares across the UK.

The UK has a wide range of fascinating places for you to visit, each with their own individual character. The Visit Britain website will show you some of the most commonly visited destinations and information on what to see and do when you visit. For any trips into London, the Tube Map will help you get around the London Underground system.

For student discounts, register for free with StudentBeans or UniDays to save money on food and drink, travel, fashion, technology, and more.
