Hi. I am Dr. Shabbir Syed-Abdul, assistant professor of GIBI, Taipei Medical University. This video is about social media and it’s role in the health care. Basically we have two videos– one talking about the good of social media and health care, and other video is about bad and ugly about social media and health care. So let’s start with the good thing. So before I go with the good things of the social media, I would like to introduce you about the internet. Since the emerging of internet, we have change the way we are communicating with ourselves with the information. Therefore there are lot of things we can see, we can view, we can watch online; and there is no authentication.

There is no way to distinguish between what is good and what is bad. Therefore we thought to talk about information related on health care, on social media. So this is an overview of health in social media. You’ll see there is an internet boom. Everyone goes and finds about diseases. So we don’t even need to go to doctors to ask about our health care system– about our health and diseases. So just you go and find things online. And the same way you see the social media here– I’m talking about general social media from Norway and Uganda. And in both cases, Google, Facebook, Yahoo are on the top. YouTube. All those things. And then I talk about Dr. Google.

What I mean by it is, whenever you need any information about your own disease or disease you are interested with, just you can go and type on Google search, and you get lots of information. This is one study from my friend talking about how Google is used for seeking health care information. And then these are the statistics and there are the studies which I am referring to, which again talk about how Google is used widely for getting information on disease. Same thing goes with the YouTube and Twitter. You see lots of things we can watch on YouTube. You don’t even need to read and your disease.

You just type the disease and you can watch people explaining you about the disease– talking about treatment, talking about symptoms, et cetera. So let’s start with the good part of the social media. So this is one of the examples which was published in Nature. How we can use gaming social media of crowd sourcing for the purpose of making some experiment. So this was about predicting protein structure with multiple online games. They were given– if you see the slide– a tool of proteins. How it can be recombined to make a structure. And the same way, I want to show you– what to say– a video about PatientsLikeMe. And you let us see the video.
This video provides various examples from the real world on the usage of social media in the healthcare. It talks about what is good, bad and ugly about social media.
