One piece of advice

In this video PhD supervisors and PhD students from University of Groningen share their one piece of advice for future supervisors.

Congratulations on completing the course! We hope that the resources, tips and moments of reflection we have presented during these three weeks have inspired you to become an even better supervisor for your PhDs.

Yet the learning does not end here. As our supervisors and PhDs mentioned, there is no one way to do a PhD, and no one way to supervise a PhD project. During this course we aimed to give you a wide range of tools and methods that will help you in your supervisory role. Yet you will encounter many situations, some of them more challenging than others. It is by practising the supervisory skills you have learned on a diverse range of PhD students, projects and situations that you will develop your own style and become the best supervisor for your PhDs. To this aim, we consider it crucial that you find ways to exchange ideas and advice with your peers, and with the facilitation of trainers and coaches.

For this reason, we encourage you to take part to in-person and (live) online workshops and coaching sessions, where you can experiment with the tools we have presented in this course, further your knowledge on specific aspects of your supervisory role, and ask for advice and support of peers and coaches. Check with your institution, as they may offer such workshops. At the University of Groningen, we offer ample opportunities for this. If you are interested in learning more about it, please get in touch.

Good luck, and we hope you keep enjoying being a PhD supervisor!
