Life on Land

The next SDG we’re talking about in the Meeting Global Challenges module is SDG 15 Life on Land. One of the reasons why we wanted to give you some mindfulness and meditation and centering techniques is because some of the information that we talk about, because we want to bring you the best of what we know, can be a little disturbing. The videos we have about life on land, talk about pollution, which we have to deal with, but we also have a video on a topic called the Sixth Mass Extinction. There have been five major extinction events in our planetary history. Some caused by asteroids, but most caused by increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

This is a tough topic to think about if you haven’t already been exposed to this particular scientific study. There are books and there are materials for you to pay attention to. But the extinction rate for species, insects, animals, both large and small, fish, and other biodiverse populations is becoming severe and it’s becoming significant. Again, we don’t want you to be discouraged . We’re trying to bring you the best of what we know and the best of what we’ve heard. But we also want you to, if you are upset by this topic, take a mindfulness moment to meditate, to think about the kinds of actions that you want to take in the world to help stop the Sixth Mass Extinction.

So it’s a tough topic, but it has to do with SDG 15 Life on Land, and it’s something that we can band together and we can help with.

The next series of videos take a look at how our land resources are being affected by human population and climate change.

Although garbage and waste in general are covered in the section that addresses SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, we have chosen to put a video regarding e-waste in this SDG section as well. When it comes to life on land, and pollution of land and water resources, e-waste is a growing problem for the world. We believe high-tech firms need to be thinking about how to reclaim, recycle or manufacture products in a way that might help with this challenge.

The video on the Sixth Mass Extinction may disturb you if you are not aware of this topic. There is a strong, scientific case to be made regarding the extinction events we are seeing unfold in the world around us. Even though this message may be hard to hear, we encourage you to pay close attention. If you need to take a moment to stay mindful or to take a meditation break, we encourage you to do so. This particular topic is distressing. The sixth mass extinction is another term you can search on in order to learn more about it.
