Meet the team

This course has been put together by a team of academics from the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK at Cardiff University, and our lead educator, Shaykh Dr Asim Yusuf.

We begin by thanking Professor Sophie Gilliat-Ray, OBE, Director for the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK, who identified the need for this course, secured the funding required for its development, and provided invaluable oversight and support for the project team.

Course Educators

Shaykh Dr Asim Yusuf. Dr Yusuf is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Islamic scholar, with a special interest in spirituality and mental health. He holds a number of formal teaching authorisations in classical Islamic disciplines; has authored works in spirituality, history, and Islamic law; and sits on the advisory boards of several charities and community initiatives. Dr Yusuf brings a wealth of theological and practice-based knowledge and expertise to the course.

Dr Asma Khan. Asma is Research Fellow in British Muslim Studies at the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK, conducting research on the impacts of migration and socio-economic inequalities on the everyday lives of British Muslims.

Maulana Dr Mansur Ali. Mansur is Lecturer in Arabic and Islamic studies at Cardiff University, based at the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK. He is a Darul Uloom graduate as well as holding a degree from the prestigious Al-Azhar University, Egypt, and postgraduate degrees from the University of Manchester.

Production Team

Dewi Parry. Dewi is a Digital Learning Manager at the Cardiff University Learning and Teaching Academy. He has expertise in developing technology-enhanced education projects across the University and has developed other FutureLearn short courses. Dewi is also a member of the Management Board for the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK.

Mark Bryant. Mark is Development Officer at the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK. He was the production manager for Cardiff University’s first short course with FutureLearn, Muslims in Britain: Changes and Challenges launched in 2014.

Andrew Hilbourne. Andy is Media Technology Officer at the Cardiff University Learning and Teaching Academy, specialising in managing educational media production services across the University. Andy contributes significantly to all Cardiff University courses on FutureLearn.
