Skip to 0 minutes and 9 seconds CATHARINA HARTMAN: Can autism also go away? The answer to this question is no. Autism will stay your entire life. It can be that symptoms become milder during the lifespan. For example, flapping with arms or spinning often disappear. But most symptoms of autism will not disappear. Autism cannot be treated with medication. But people with autism can learn a great deal in their lives. They can, for example, learn social skills and that may make their life a little bit easier. It’s important to practise social skills as much as possible and as early as possible. And that’s why it’s so important to detect autism early in life. Learning social skills doesn’t mean that autism will go away.

Skip to 0 minutes and 58 seconds Adults who function perfectly well in a situation because they’ve learned the social skills can run into trouble in a new situation. For example, they may have learned that it is good to pat your brother on the back when he’s done something good. But they wouldn’t know that this is not done with your boss. Such social rules are really complicated for people with autism. People with autism may be able to function very well if their surroundings can be adapted to their needs. If the things that bother a person with autism can be removed, they may be able to do their work very well. But often times it is not possible to fully live independently or work for people with autism.

Skip to 1 minute and 37 seconds And partly this is true because the surroundings are not adapted to them.
