5.5
Hello, welcome to The Business of Beauty course. My name is Lisa Mann and I’m the director of postgraduate professional and online programmes here at the Condé Nast College. I’ve designed the structure of all our FutureLearn courses and worked with some amazing academic and industry experts to develop unique learning content. Whether this is your first course or you’ve studied with us before, thank you for making us part of your education journey. This course is ideal for anyone wanting to learn more about the beauty industry and how beauty brands market their products and communicate their values.

Providing you with a unique blend of academic and industry expertise, this is an introductory course suited to anyone with an interest in the business of fashion, beauty and the media. So whether you’re a student, an entrepreneur or someone who aspires to work in the beauty industry, this course will help to expand your knowledge and provide you with insights into the latest industry developments. To give you a better understanding of what you’ll learn throughout the duration of this course, I wanted to highlight some of the key points that we will focus on.

You’ll study the fascinating evolution and exponential growth of the beauty industry and the marketing and communication methods used, whilst also finding out about both current and future beauty trends and the ways in which beauty brands are featured in the media. You’ll learn to study the beauty industry whilst gaining insights from industry experts and academics such as Sara Hassan, creative director of Condé Nast College, and Sophie Cullen, a beauty editor who’s worked for titles such as Glamour, GQ, Brides and Harper’s Bazaar. You you’ll explore how the industry is responding to global trends now and for the future, and how beauty brands use forecasting insights to plan for change.

We’ll also cover how you can develop your own ideas and produce creative pieces of work in response to the course content, putting into practise everything you’ve learnt. The aim of this course is to provide an understanding of the beauty industry by introducing key marketing and communication methods used by beauty brands in the media, and to provide you with insights into past and present beauty trends, whilst reflecting on the value of the beauty sector to the wider fashion industry. The Condé Nast College has unrivalled access to the best and brightest minds in the industry, including the teams at Vogue, Glamour, GQ and a host of other Condé Nast titles. Good luck with your studies.

We look forward to hearing about your course experience and hopefully welcoming you again soon.

Welcome to the Business of Beauty, the final course in our Expert Track, The Future of Fashion and Media.

In this video I provide you with an overview of what to expect from this course.

Along with myself, other members of the course team include:

Sara Hassan: The Creative Director of Condé Nast College, a fashion editor, stylist and writer who has been in the industry for 20 years. Her career began after she achieved a BA (Hons) Fashion Communication & Promotion from Central Saint Martins.

Sophie Cullen: A multi-award-winning beauty journalist and brand consultant who has worked across the national press, women’s glossies, weeklies and digital publications.

Julie Jacobs: A fashion & beauty makeup artist based in London. A beauty editor & writer and brand consultant.

To get the most out of this course, we strongly recommend engaging, as much as you feel comfortable doing so, in the discussion areas and making full use of the comment sections found attached to each step.

The more you refer to your own experiences and interests, and the more you use the areas and comments to inspire and encourage your fellow learners, the more you will gain from the course.
