Being prepared and planning is probably the most important aspect of successful plating.

I usually decide what I am going to cook or bake first, then decide how I am going to serve it before deciding on how the actual presentation will look.

The importance of making food look attractive is a visual experience. If the food looks appetizing, you are more likely to want to try it and more importantly enjoy it when you do – hence the term eating with your eyes.
