Executive Summary

When FutureLearn was founded eight years ago, our mission was to transform access to education. While our global network of partners has grown to almost 250 and the number of courses we’ve created is now well into the thousands, our commitment to ensuring everyone, everywhere is offered the chance to learn has never been stronger.

The Future of Learning Report explores what and why people are learning online right now, the impact of COVID-19 on learning, as well as the opportunities and challenges our respondents and experts think the future of education has in store.

While our report shows great optimism for where online learning will take individuals, their communities, and their countries, it also identified significant obstacles on the road to making education available to anyone who needs it. These global challenges are problems to be solved together – by sharing, working, and learning across borders and communities. For us at FutureLearn, the future of learning is partnering with the best organisations and universities, creating inspiring and life-changing courses, and ensuring as many people as possible have the chance to achieve their goals.

Mapping the future of learning at FutureLearn

For us, the future of education is accessible, personalised, and collaborative. We continue to work towards offering a wider selection of completely free, open courses and designing our platform so that it’s universally accessible and inclusive. We’re building more routes into education, giving you the option to choose paid-for courses or credentials that will progress your career, help you explore a new industry, or learn for fun. And, as everyone learns differently, the option to choose courses that are meaningful to you, your employers, and your future, continues to power everything we do.

Equally, we’re always working to find ways to connect you with like-minded people because we know that the future of education is togetherness – global cohorts of learners in a global society. Our courses are designed to help you connect and expand your perspectives to include new cultures, approaches, experiences, feelings and concepts. We don’t want a world of studying alone.
