Hopefully you have more understanding of the impact of being diagnosed with and living with diabetes and the importance of health, wellness, and holism in living with a chronic illness. In summary, it’s important to have a sense of your own meaning of health and wellness, which will be different for different people. However, for most people, it will probably include having a balance between the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of ourselves. It probably involves having a sense of purpose, direction and goals, and sense of achievement.

Skip to 0 minutes and 40 seconds The notion of holism, or that a person is more than the total sum of their parts suggests an interconnection between our physical, social, and psychological selves and relationship with the environments in which we study, live, and work. From this perspective, people living with chronic illness and not defined or necessarily limited by their illness, but find innovative ways to manage and live well. It’s now time to look forward to what you will be learning in week 2. Next week, we’ll continue to explore the impact of being diagnosed with diabetes and also the attitudes of others towards diabetes. We’ll also look more closely at living well with diabetes and in particular self-efficacy and self-management.
