Analysing moving image

Hopefully from the last step you could see how using the 3Cs and 3Ss prompt card to analyse a still image could help you gain deeper meaning from it.

We are now going to build upon the 3Cs and 3Ss framework and consider an activity including moving image that will excite and inspire students. Re-watch the archive footage we viewed in Step 1.7, and remember the kinds of questions we saw on the prompts cards; consider what is happening, where and when it took place. Was it a special occasion? How are the people dressed?

Now take a look at the still image below which is from the film footage. Download and print the Archive Frame and Colourising Archive Worksheet documents attached to this step – we’re going to colourise the scene! You will need a plastic pocket in which to place your image and then colour over with marker pens.

1) Add colours to the palette that you think are key to the image.

2) Write down the mood you think each colour creates next to it on the palette.

3) Answer the questions on the right hand side of the sheet.

When you’ve completed the Colourising Archive Worksheet, add your colours to the Archive Frame image. We’d love to see your creation, so please add it to our Padlet wall!

In the classroom you could follow this up by doing the character activity from the previous step and asking the young people to create dialogue and a mini script. They could then create a voiceover for the still image, creating a personalised archive film! We’ll be showing you how to add voiceovers to still images in Week 2.
