The fact is, digital technologies have seeped their way into all aspects of modern life to the point where most of us, including the organisations we work for, would have difficulty functioning without them. Welcome to career credentials, evidence your expertise and digital literacy. I’m Dr. Nick Patterson, a director of professional practice degrees in IT at Deakin University. Digital literacy is crucial to navigating the age of digital information, which means to succeed in a world that’s more connected than ever before, we need to be digitally literate. It’s also one of the most in-demand skills employers are looking for.

Skip to 0 minutes and 48 seconds Employees in all kinds of industries must harness digital technology not only to carry out basic technical tasks, but also to find, assess, use, and share information. But what do we mean when we refer to digital literacy? In this course, we’ll look at how to answer this and other important questions like why does digital literacy matter for my employability, what level of digital literacy am I at, and how can I most effectively demonstrate this to employers? To do this, in week one, we’ll look at what digital literacy means and how it relates to employability by considering employer and employee perspectives, and exploring what skills and capabilities are associated with digital literacy.

Skip to 1 minute and 30 seconds In week two, we’ll move from defining digital literacy to practical ways you can benchmark benchmark and evidence your digital literacy against international qualifications frameworks, including Deakin’s own professional practice criteria. As you work your way through this course, keep in mind that what while you will discover practical tips, insights, and new ways of thinking about digital literacy, this course is really about guiding you to reflect on your own skills, knowledge, and expertise. By the end of this course, you might even be ready to apply for your own internationally recognised credential in digital literacy. We have a lot of great material and activities to cover in the next two weeks, so let’s get started.

Digital literacy is in high demand across all industries and employment sectors.

But what is digital literacy? What digital literacy skills do you have and how would go about benchmarking and demonstrating these to benefit your career goals?

Setting the scene for your learning

It’s hard to think of a job these days that doesn’t require digital literacy.

Digital literacy skills are now a crucial part of being an effective employee in a world affected by rapid digital change and information exchange.

In fact, research analysing early career job advertisements found that demand for digital literacy skills increased by over 200% between 2012 and 2015. It’s therefore more important than ever to be able to understand and demonstrate your digital literacy.

But digital literacy can be a difficult concept to define and many of us find it difficult to assess our skill level, and market these to employers.

What will you be learning?

In this course you’ll:

  • investigate the role of digital literacy in both jobs of today and the future
  • explore what digital literacy skills employers are looking for
  • discover practical tips and strategies for improving your digital literacy
  • benchmark your own capability in digital literacy against international qualifications frameworks and Deakin’s Professional Practice criteria
  • discover how to apply for an internationally recognised, university-level credential in digital literacy.

Your learning outcomes

By completing this course, you should be able to:

  • describe digital literacy, and its importance to the workplace
  • describe the behaviours, skills and knowledge that typify digital literacy
  • assess your current digital literacy against a qualifications framework
  • collect evidence of your capability to demonstrate to employers and/or apply for a digital literacy credential.
